Advanced Database Management
Go beyond basic queries to design, protect, and improve relational databases used by real applications.
Prerequisite skills
Working knowledge of SQL: SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, WHERE, JOIN, and GROUP BY. You should be able to create tables and understand primary and foreign keys.
Knowledge you need
Relational database concepts including tables, data types, relationships, constraints, and normalization. Experience with MySQL or PostgreSQL is recommended.
Skills you will develop
Write advanced SQL joins and subqueries; design normalized schemas; use indexes and EXPLAIN to investigate query performance; manage transactions, permissions, backups, and recovery.
Where you can apply it
Build and maintain databases for websites, mobile applications, inventory, banking and finance, customer records, school systems, health services, and reporting; improve slow queries; protect sensitive information; and plan backups and recovery for MySQL or PostgreSQL systems.
Recommendation to Learners
Take this course if you already know basic SQL and want to work with data systems that are reliable, secure, and fast. Nearly every business application depends on well-managed data; poor database design can cause slow services, errors, or lost information. Advanced querying, indexing, permissions, and recovery skills are valuable for backend development, database administration, and software engineering.
